Are Arthur Murray Dance Studios Racist?

Posted by admin on December 9th, 2009 and filed under arthur murray dance studios | 1 Comment »

Let me say that I look biracial and have long red hair but I STILL think something was up. I auditioned last night for them–a group class. I am an attractive girl. I have danced for 15 years and have near flawless technique. My hair was perfect, totally cute outfit (I’m a size 5), my makeup was great. I knew all of the dances, was very outgoing friendly, and made sure not to exclude anyone whin choosing a partner, but I still didn’t get an interview. But you know who did? This blonde girl who was also pretty, but told me during the audition that there was a guy (there were six in all) that she didn’t want to dance with because he was ‘weird’. How snotty! All six gentlemen were all nice–a couple were shy, but still. It’s not a marriage! It’s for fun. Something else that bothered me was that she and some of the other girls (when we were asked to move to the next guy) would act like they ‘didn’t see’ the two black guys toward the end. (The ‘wierd’ one was black.) Anyway, when I was researching what to wear for the audition, I looked at dozens of Arthur Murray websites, facebook and Myspace as well, thinking back there were NO black females, and maybe ONE black guy. This realllly bothers me! Has anyone ever seen any African American women working for Arthur Murray??? P.S. The entire female staff there was blonde barbies. Am I alone?
Note: I have nothing against blondes, or Barbies, lol. I’m kinda like a toffee Barbie, lol. ;)

You won’t see many African-Americans on ballroom websites for the simple reason that few African-Americans get into ballroom. It’s self-selective, so you’ll see an over-representation of Russians and Ukrainians, and an under-representation of other groups. That’s just the way it is. Also, you should understand that both AM and Fred Astaire are generally franchises, so hiring isn’t done by a national organization, but by local studio owners. Perhaps you were slighted for that or another reason, but it would be a gross misrepresentation to expand that to the entire AM system.

Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Plano, TX – Prices?

Posted by admin on December 1st, 2009 and filed under arthur murray dance studios | 1 Comment »

I’m wanting to take some salsa lessons, but I found the AM site to be very uninformative about prices. I know the first one is $25, but can someone who takes classes there currently or has taken them within the last year tell me how much you payed and for how long of a session? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi! I work at the Plano Arthur Murray and wanted to help you out! The reason we don’t put prices on the website is because it is different for everyone. We tailor your lessons to fit your needs, schedule, and budget. To give you a little bit more of a ballpark, though…our private lessons are 40 minutes long, we also offer group classes and practice parties that are for our students only. Since I don’t know your specific situation, I would highly recommend that you start with the introductory lesson (there’s a place on the website where you can sign up for a free one!), that way we can give you a more accurate idea of what it will take for you to learn. Our programs start at around $550 and will typically include anywhere from 8 – 12 sessions depending on what you need. I hope you will come in and check out the studio. I have found over the years that it is much better to be informed and experience the atmosphere and teaching style and not just make your decision on price alone. Hope that was helpful!!!

A couple of questions for current Arthur Murray Dance Instructors or people who know them…?

Posted by admin on October 14th, 2009 and filed under arthur murray dance studios | 1 Comment »

Hello! I have been so interested in becoming a dance instructor through arthur murray. So I went on one interview and had some of my questions answered (rather vaguely) and I have a few more. I am hesitant in rushing to apply because I want to make sure I can live off of what an arthur murray dance instructor would make, before I commit. I also heard that some studios require an 1-2 year commitment which could also influence my decision. So here are my questions. Answer what you can. I am completely grateful for all answers and your time!

1. How long are your individual lessons to your clients?

2. How many lessons do you have each day? Is there a minimum that each instructor is guaranteed?

3. How much do you make base pay per hour?

4. How long are you there each day? Do you have a set schedule?

~Thank you for all answers! I really want to do this, but need to know if this is the right time for me or if I should wait. I do not want to sign up to commit to something that I will not be able to do and have not been given thorough feedback before. PLEASE ONLY ANSWERS FROM CURRENT OR RECENT A.M. DANCE INSTRUCTORS OR PEOPLE WHO KNOW A.M. PROCEDURES. Thanks again:)

Is anyone a Arthur Murray Dance Instructor?

Posted by admin on October 6th, 2009 and filed under arthur murray dance studios | 1 Comment »

I’m currently a trainee at a Arthur Murray studio in Viriginia and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what i can expect to be making…also if u could include how the salary grows after years…I know that the salary is based on commission but i just wanted to know a average. Thank You.
PLEASE DON’T RESPOND WITH I DONT KNOW OR LIE, ONLY ANSWER IF YOU WILL BE HELPFUL

Hey,

I am an independent dance instructor in Boston Area, MA
I have worked at a studio before, but never for an Arthur Murray…..But I do have some friends who used to teach for Arthur Murray studios so I am familiar with their system….. So I may be able to help.

Basically from what I know you get about $15-$25/lesson base depending on your experience + some 1.5%-2.5% commission of sales. These are rough estimates.

And so it will depend on how much you will teach, like some people teach 60 lessons a week… so they can make good money (I personally don’t have the energy for that many)…. but if you want to teach only 30-40, then you won’t make as much.

I know some teachers who have been there for a very long time and they make pretty good salaries.
