Arthur Murry Dance Studio Vs. Fred Astaire Dance Studio?

Posted by admin on August 17th, 2009 and filed under fred astaire studios | 2 Comments »

Umm so I am in an argument with a girl from my dance studio, she says that the best ballroom dance studio to teach and Learn form is Arthur Murry, and I say that if I had to choose I would say Fred Astaire,

What do you think?
What studio is better? and Why?
Well…we live in New York but we are just saying out of any of them across the United States which one is better?
Fred Astaire or Arthur Murry?

Personally, I’d never learn from a studio that took people off of the street and trained them to "teach" ballroom. How the hell can you be qualified to "teach" something after only having done it for like a month or less? I mean, I’ve been dancing for 7 years, but I’d still never presume that I knew enough to teach someone else. So I’d say neither, because smaller individual studios win over chain studios any day of the week.

White Christmas. What is the difference between saying someone has anorexia or has anorexia nervosa?

Posted by admin on August 15th, 2009 and filed under fred astaire studios | 2 Comments »

Every year when "White Christmas" plays or is played somewhere, I have to hear people comment on the late beautiful, talented actress-dancer Vera-Ellen who died of cancer at age 60 and was never diagnosed or treated for anorexia nervosa. Yet people seem to love to recount how the studio had to cover her neck because she was "suffering" from anorexia and her bones showed. This is biased media information–Did Fred Astaire look good in low cut shirts? No, they were skinny! So what. This poor women was made into a poster child for anorexia and people do not seem to know the difference between anorexia and anorexia nervosa. She was never diagnosed. Do you know the difference between anorexia and anorexia nervosa? How common is the actual eating disorder?
Clue: No, they are not at all the same.
M.M. Spears you are a trooper for answering this question twice. You will get 10 pts. on one of them. Thanks.

Anorexia is an abbreviated way of saying anorexia nervosa. They are the same. It’s like saying a person has Down’s, as opposed to saying they have Down’s Syndrome.

The definition of anorexia, according to Merriam-Webster:
Anorexia Nervosa; loss of appetite especially when prolonged.

The definition of anorexia nervosa, according to M-W:
: a serious disorder in eating behavior primarily of young women in their teens and early twenties that is characterized especially by a pathological fear of weight gain leading to faulty eating patterns, malnutrition, and usually excessive weight loss.

If you are very good with movies from the 50’s and 60’s, please help me find the title of this movie i saw?

Posted by admin on August 13th, 2009 and filed under fred astaire studios | 2 Comments »

Ok, i saw this movie a while ago because in my free time i like to watch old musicals and pleasant films from the 50’s and 60’s. Unfortunately, because i watched it a couple months ago online, i dont remember the name of it or which stars were in it. Hopefully someone here is well versed in the movies of this time period and could help me.

This was not a drama, it was definitely a light hearted film, probably from MGM since i watch a lot of their movies, i dont recall it had many musical numbers though. Its from the 50s or 60s and it was in color, but as part of the plot it is set in a time period when they were first transitioning from silent films to talkies. Now here are a few scenes i remember from the movie. In the beginning it starts out with movie stars arriving to some movie debut. And the press is taking pictures of them and asking brief questions about the film. Then i remember there is some guy trying to run away for some reason, i think a crowd of fans were chasing him then the police are chasing him or end up chasing him, not sure. Hes a movie star too, he hops on the back of a passing bus, hops off later, and his clothes are all ragged from fans ripping them off, so no one recognizes him as a movie star anymore now that hes not presentable. He manages to get a car, then picks up a random girl to give her a ride cause he claims hes going in the same direction but he really just finds her attractive. She has short hair, either red or brown. In the car they discuss what line of work theyre both in, one of them has a newspaper open. She downplays his acting and makes it seem like theatre actors are better than movie screen actors and assumes that hes a untalented snob and makes it seem like her line of work is more esteemed. She leaves the car without exchanging contacts upon arriving at her stop. He later sees this girl performing with a group of girls in pink costumes at some movie executives party where they are debuting the first movie with sound. He makes fun of her like, hey i remember you, youre that "serious" actress i gave a ride to a while back, poking fun that an actress at her prestigious level should not be doing freelance group dance routines, the guy is just playing sarcastic overall the guy is still interested in her. Earlier in the movie there were scenes of a movie being made, they started off with silent films, and this same guys costar is a short hair blonde chick who was also in the big movie premiere in the intro. In this scene in the romance movie theyre making, this chick is in a powdered wig and the same actor guy is trying to woo her, and theyre mouthing words to each other with expressions of love on their faces but theyre really insulting each other all the while because they do not like each other, it doesnt get picked up tho because again its a silent film theyre doing. They are all dressed very mozart opera style. Before the project is completed, the studio head decided to make it a talking film so in the transition, they showed how the script sucked, and they showed how they played around with the idea of where they are going to put the mic on set to pic up sound. They put it in the flowers close to the girl, they sewed it in her bust, they tried to put it under her dress, many failed attempts till finally something worked. This same actress had a high pitch voice, and was shown as being very demanding and pompus, thinking she is more valuable to the movie industry than she really is, completely in love with her stardom, all the while she has someone do voiceovers for her in movies and live performances, because with the conversion from silent films to talkies they now had to deal with her annoying high pitch voice since they deemed it not suitable for her work. Anyhow, at the end, she is exposed when shes on stage singing something and someone opens the curtains to reveal that someone else was backstage singing for her all along. And im sure the actor guy ended up with the chick he was interested in from the beginning. And thats all i remember.

I tend to watch a lot of movies with gene kelly, judy garland, marilyn monroe, fred astaire, but i dont believe any of these people were in this film, i checked their film lists and none of the titles seemed to match this movie. The only one i possibly thought came close was gene kelly because i could have sworn he was the main character actor guy but i dont see the proper title of the movie under his movie listings. I think the Blonde chick in this film may have been a big star of the time, not sure. Hopefully someone here will recognize my plot description i would so greatly appreciate all suggestions as to whats the name of this movie. Thank you!
Man, i am a major DUNCE! I can believe it was singing in the rain all along, its been right under my nose sitting in my movie file! I recently downloaded it knowing it was a classic i had watched once before and enjoyed but i hadnt seen it again since. I kept canceling singing in the rain out as an option because the only scenes my memory kept associating with it were the "good morning" scene in someones house with three people dancing and singing, the part where Gene is "singing and dancing in the Rain", and towards the end the big avant-garde broadway set up number with cyd charise and all the lights and extravaganza. For some reason my mind took the rest of the plot and envisioned it was a completely different movie, ha! Perhaps goes to show how the singing in the rain concept and title did not best describe the movie, as said by other critics. Bottom line, THANX so much for your help tonight, its been running through my mind all week and now i can rest easy and watch it 2mrw, YAY!

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, Singing In the Rain?

Your description is nearly scene by scene! If this isn’t it, I must find this "impostor!" It sounds so similar!

Cyd Cherice also has a cameo! I don’t know that I’m spelling her name correctly, but no-one could forget those legs!

Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously!

Does anyone know the name of this Classic Musical?

Posted by admin on August 11th, 2009 and filed under fred astaire studios | 1 Comment »

I saw a clip of this musical awhile ago and I really want to find the name of the movie. In the clip a man (maybe Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly or someone else) went into a dance studio to get dance lessons from a beautiful women. The man acts like he doesn’t know how to dance, but really he’s a great dancer. They have a dance sequence where they dance all around the studio. Thanks!

Swing Time, made in 1936. I love that movie!

It had Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

How much is too much to pay for dance clothes?

Posted by admin on August 9th, 2009 and filed under fred astaire studios | 1 Comment »

I’m taking lessons through Fred Astaire studios and have started getting more serious. I’m working on a solo choreography and first they quoted $100 for a simple outfit just for the solo (which honestly sounded somewhat cheap actually) and $200 for my dance partner’s (the woman’s which I’d assume would be more). Then they went and had a designer design something for me with the solo in mind but also the idea that I could wear most of the pieces all of the time. The price of that was $1100. From what they said being more of a social dancer not a competitor I would probably be satisfied with it for the rest of my life and this was a steal because some outfits cost $3000. This sounds a bit crazy to me though I know clothing can get expensive I know prices can be jacked up too. I’m pretty new to dancing but taking a lot of lessons now and not sure where to go from here, I’m not a fool I know there can be good clothing with a mark up too. I don’t want to be cheap but I’m obviously not interested in being ripped off either. Do these things really last a lifetime if you’re only a moderate dancer?

You could most certainly hire your own seamstress to make the outfits. If you are questioning it, it is too much, your heart isn’t in the clothes. If you felt you needed it no matter what, then it isn’t. I wouldn’t pay that but to each his own. It probably would last quite a while because you’re dancing, not rolling around on the floor or something (or are you? Apache dancing?)
