You could also attend their shows and ask them in person, since they'd probably be the best source of information. It's quite possible they didn't record at a big studio, since lots of people have home studios where they can achieve the same quality at a fraction of the cost. And if you find an act you like that recorded their CD in a home studio, there's a good chance they'd jump at the chance to record yours. My brother has a full ProTools studio in his house and he's won awards for CDs he's recorded there, though he charges a lot less than studios that operate as stand-alone businesses. The technology today is such that you might be better off working in the home studio of someone who specializes in your style of music.
